What is Warticon Solution?

Warticon Solution is a topical treatment for genital warts in both men and women who are over 18 years of age.

It contains the active ingredient podophyllotoxin, which is a plant extract that belongs to a group of medicines known as antivirals.

What is Warticon Solution used to treat?

Warticon can be used as a genital warts treatment by both men and women.

It is a discreet and simple topical solution to use and should be applied twice a day. When used correctly, it should have fully eradicated genital warts within four to five weeks of treatment. Speak to your doctor if you have used Warticon solution for this long and your genital warts have still not cleared. An alternative form of treatment may be more suitable.

Using a medicine such as this to treat genital warts comes with the risk that you may be left with some minor scarring. However, in most cases, the scarring will be far less noticeable compared to the scarring you could suffer if you leave this problem untreated.

How does Warticon Solution work?

Warticon Solution is used specifically for external vaginal warts in women and warts that appear on the foreskin of the penis in men.

You should apply Warticon Solution directly to genital warts and allow it to dry.

Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV); this virus also works to keep them alive. Warticon's active ingredient targets the virus itself and attacks it, which stops the virus from spreading even further. When the virus has been killed off, the genital warts will also die.

In time, the wart tissue left behind will fall away on its own, allowing new and healthy tissue to grow instead.

Warticon Cream or Solution?

Both the cream and solution versions of Warticon can provide very effective treatment for genital warts. Warticon Cream is white and soaks in when applied to the skin. In contrast, the solution is blue and may make the site of application blue while using it.

However, the solution is more likely to be recommended for men. It comes with a spatula and may be easier to apply to the male genitals. Similarly, the cream is usually recommended for women as they may find it easier to apply.

One version of the medicine will not cure genital warts at a significantly faster rate than the other, so the choice as to which you use is yours.

Who can use Warticon Solution?

Warticon is not a suitable treatment for everyone to use.

Do not use Warticon if any of the below applies to you:

• You are allergic to podophyllotoxin or any of the other ingredients contained in this solution
• You are already using any other medication that also contains podophyllotoxin
• Your warts are on an area of skin that is bleeding, damaged or broken

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for guidance before using Warticon if your genital warts cover an area that is larger than 4 centimetres (approximately the size of a postage stamp). This treatment may need to be applied by a medical professional if this is the case.

Warticon should not be used as a treatment for warts in or around the anus. It should not be applied inside the penis or vagina.

Warticon Solution Indications and Dose

To effectively treat genital warts, you must use Warticon Solution as you have been told by your doctor or pharmacist. Please read the patient information leaflet thoroughly before you start to use it and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

Warticon Solution should be applied twice a day every 12 hours, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Use Warticon Solution twice a day for three days. After this, you should not apply it for four days; this seven-day period is one treatment cycle. If required, Warticon can be used for four consecutive cycles.

You can apply a maximum of four courses of treatment. 

How to apply Warticon Solution

1. Wash the affected area with soap and water. Dry the skin with a clean towel.
2. Use a new applicator each time you apply the solution.
3. Dip the ‘loop’ end of the applicator into the solution. If you are treating one large wart or a cluster of warts in a small area, you should dip the ‘spatula’ end into the solution.
4. Apply Warticon Solution to a wart until it is just covered. Allow the solution to dry.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each wart. Make sure the solution has dried before any other skin touches the affected area.
6. Wash your hands with soap and water after each application.
7. Screw the lid on tightly after use.

Do not get the solution onto healthy areas of skin. If this happens, wash it off immediately with soap and water.

Warticon Solution Side Effects

The following side effects are very common and may affect more than 1 in 10 people who use this solution:

• Irritation at the site of application, including burning, itching or redness
• Wearing away of the top layers of skin

Some people have also reported the following side effects, although the frequency of these reactions cannot be estimated:

• Weeping wound, damage to or loss of the top layer of skin
• Scab, skin ulcer, dry skin, blister, skin discolouration
• Bleeding, swelling, pain, allergic reaction

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if any of these side effects bother you or do not go away.

Stop using this medicine and seek urgent medical attention if you get any of the side effects listed below:

• Severe burning, stinging, bleeding, pain, itching or swelling of the treatment area

Warticon Solution Warnings

Before you start applying Warticon, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are already using any other prescription or non-prescription medication.

It is particularly important to tell them if you are using any other medicines that contain Warticon's active ingredient, podophyllotoxin.

Do not combine Warticon with any other treatment for genital warts.

This treatment should not be used by anyone who is under the age of 18.

After applying Warticon for two or three consecutive days, you may experience mild irritation of the treatment areas. In most cases, this should be no cause for concern and is a sign that the medicine is working.

However, in some instances, this may be a symptom of a severe skin reaction. If you are suffering an allergic reaction, stop using the treatment and seek medical attention immediately.

Things to avoid with Warticon

You should not have sex while being treated for genital warts. The herpes simplex virus is highly contagious and you can pass the virus on to your sexual partner. Wait until all of your warts have cleared completely and the skin has totally healed before having sex again.

You must use a condom if you do have sex. Not only will this help to prevent the virus from spreading (although it will not remove the risk completely), it will also stop your partner from coming into contact with the active ingredient, podophyllotoxin, which is an irritant.

This medicine is flammable. Do not smoke or go near an open flame while applying the treatment or immediately after application.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

You are not advised to use this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

You should not have sex while using Warticon. If you do have sex, you should use a condom. Make sure your doctor or pharmacist is aware if you are already pregnant or are trying to get pregnant.

If you become pregnant during treatment, speak to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as you can.

How long will Warticon take to work?

As long as you follow your doctor’s instructions, Warticon should have fully cured genital warts within four to five weeks of using the solution. If your warts have still not cleared after this time, speak to your doctor or local sexual health clinic.

You should not use any other wart treatments at the same time as using Warticon. This will probably irritate the skin and can also increase the risk of scarring.

Can I only use Warticon to treat genital warts?

Yes, Warticon is only licensed for the treatment of genital warts. It should not be used elsewhere on the body.

Is it safe to cut a wart off myself?

Never cut warts off by yourself. This can lead to scarring and will not cure the root of the issue. You should always seek medical attention if you are suffering from warts.

Will Warticon leave scarring?

Using Warticon can leave scars, but this does not happen to everyone. Scars are often dependent on how severe the case of genital warts is. However, you should bear in mind that any scarring left after treatment with Warticon will be far less noticeable than scarring that can occur if you do not treat your warts.

How can I stop warts from spreading?

You should not touch other people’s warts, wash your hands regularly and avoid letting areas covered by warts touch healthy skin. Most importantly, you should seek medical attention for your genital warts.

What should I do if Warticon Solution doesn’t work?

It may take up to four or five weeks for the problem to go away entirely. You can use Warticon for up to four treatment cycles. If you have not seen an improvement after this time, speak to your doctor or local sexual health clinic.

Can I drink alcohol with it?

While alcohol will not interact with Warticon, it can impair your immune system, which makes it harder to fight off viruses.
