What is Condyline?

Condyline is a topical cutaneous solution that contains the plant extract podophyllotoxin as its active ingredient.

You need a prescription to buy Condyline. Most people who are given a prescription to use Condyline are done so to treat genital warts.

What is Condyline used to treat?

Condyline solution is primarily used in the treatment of genital warts in both men and women. To destroy genital warts, Condyline must be applied in weekly cycles.

Genital warts are the result of an infection of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can grow around the vagina, penis or anus and are frequently spread through sexual intercourse. While both men and women can suffer from genital warts, the problem is slightly more common in women.

Why is Condyline prescribed to treat genital warts?

Condyline can often improve the condition within just three days of use, although it may take longer for genital warts to clear completely. It will normally clear smaller outbreaks within five weeks of treatment.

Condyline's active ingredient, podophyllotoxin, has been clinically proven to be a safe and effective treatment for genital warts.

How does Condyline work?

This solution contains the plant extract podophyllotoxin, which enters the nuclei of the infected cells and acts on the mechanism that makes genital wart cells divide. This means that genital warts cannot grow or spread anywhere else, which promotes healthy skin to replace the wart tissue.

Condyline is effective in the treatment of genital warts when used at an early stage before the infection has had a chance to spread over a larger area. Condyline is most effective when used on smaller warts and can help to suppress the signs and symptoms caused by genital warts.

Who can use Condyline?

You should not use Condyline if any of the following apply to you:

• You are currently using or have recently used any other medicines which contain podophyllotoxin
• You have recently had surgery and still have any open wounds near the affected area
• You are allergic to podophyllotoxin or any other ingredients contained in this solution

This medicine should only be used by adults, it is not suitable for children.

No, Condyline is only available on prescription, so cannot be bought over the counter.

Condyline Dosage

Our pharmacist and prescribers follow NICE prescribing guidelines when prescribing Condyline.

Condyline should only be applied externally. Do not apply the solution to any soft mucous membrane tissue, such as the vagina or anus.

You should start your course of treatment in the morning.

Use Condyline twice a day for three days. This means you will have six treatments in three days. After this, you should not apply the treatment again in the first week.

Avoid contact with the eyes, lips and nostrils.

How to use Condyline

1. Wash the affected area with soap and water before you apply Condyline. Dry the clean skin well.
2. Dip the end of the applicator stick with a hole in it into the bottle. Dip the stick far enough so that the hole is filled with solution.
3. Apply the solution to a wart and let it dry on its own. Cover each wart in the same way. Do not use more than 50 dips.
4. Replace the bottle’s top and wash your hands thoroughly after use.
5. You should repeat these steps 12 hours later and then again the next morning, twice a day.

If one week of treatment is not sufficient to remove all your warts, your doctor may tell you to repeat this treatment cycle for a second time. You may also need to do this for several more weeks after this. Tell your doctor if your warts have not healed after the recommended course of treatment.

Condyline Side Effects

Like all medicines, Condyline does come with a certain risk of side effects, although not everyone will be affected by them.

You should contact your doctor immediately if:

• You have swelling or a build-up of fluid in your genital area
• You have a severe skin rash or redness of the skin
• You have severe burning, itching or irritation of the skin in the area you applied the treatment
• You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
• You have inflammation of the glands or foreskin or irritation of the vagina

Condyline Warnings and Drug Interactions

Like all medicines, Condyline may interact with other medications.

Do not stop using this medicine until you have completed the course of treatment outlined by your doctor. Similarly, do not keep using it for longer than your doctor has instructed you to.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Condyline is not generally prescribed to women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are currently pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are trying to get pregnant, you should inform your doctor before they prescribe you this treatment.

The same applies for if you are breastfeeding. There may be a more suitable treatment for you to use.
