What is Cialis?
Cialis is the brand name for a medicine known as tadalafil, which is a medication used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and prostate enlargement in men.
You need a prescription to buy Cialis tablets.
What is Cialis used to treat?
Cialis (tadalafil) is used to treat erectile dysfunction and the symptoms of benign prostate enlargement.
Erectile dysfunction can be a stressful and embarrassing problem for men to deal with. Therefore, using a treatment like Cialis can work to relieve this stress by allowing you to enjoy normal sexual activity without the fear of not being able to gain or maintain an erection.
Why is Cialis recommended for erectile dysfunction?
The active ingredient in Cialis is tadalafil. It is known to work quickly, taking just 30 minutes to become effective. A benefit of Cialis over other erectile dysfunction medicines is that the effects of this tablet can last for up to 36 hours.
Tadalafil is known to last much longer than sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra tablets), making Cialis a renowned treatment for erectile dysfunction.
How does Cialis work?
Cialis tablets contain tadalafil, which belongs to a group of medicines known as PDE-5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitors. It works by relaxing the blood vessels that flow to the penis. Doing this means that more blood can flow to the penis, making it much easier for you to gain and keep an erection.
Cialis will not work on men who are not suffering from erectile dysfunction.
Cialis will only work if you are sexually aroused, so you and your partner should still engage in foreplay to gain an erection.
Who can take Cialis?
Cialis (tadalafil) tablets may not be suitable for everyone to use.
Do not take Cialis if any of the below apply to you:
- You have uncontrolled high blood pressure or low blood pressure
- You have recently had a stroke or a heart attack
- You are allergic to tadalafil or any other ingredients in this medicine
- You have had an allergic reaction to Cialis or any other medicine in the past
- You have ever lost your vision because of a reduced blood flow to the eyes
- You have a serious heart or liver problem
- You are taking any nitrate medicines for chest pain
Tadalafil tablets such as Cialis are not suitable for any children or adolescents under the age of 18 years old.
This information is not exhaustive. Always read the patient information leaflet for a complete list of warnings.
Can you buy Cialis over the counter?
Cialis is a prescription-only medicine (POM), meaning you must have been prescribed it by a doctor. You cannot buy Cialis over the counter.
Can you buy Cialis online in the UK?
To buy Cialis online, you will first need to complete a confidential online questionnaire. This is so one of our prescribers can review your condition and medical history to make sure this medicine is suitable for you to take. We can offer you next day delivery if you place your order by 2pm.
Cialis alternatives
Viagra is probably the most famous treatment for erectile dysfunction. Viagra contains sildenafil and is also available to buy from Medicine Direct.
Spedra is another ED medication that gets to work in around the same time as Cialis. The effects of this medicine generally last for around 4 hours.
Vitaros cream is a topical treatment for erectile dysfunction and may be a handy alternative for men who find it difficult to swallow whole tablets. The cream is inserted into the opening of the penis and helps to widen the blood vessels of the penis, making it easier to gain an erection.

Cialis Dose
Cialis tablets come in doses of either 5mg, 10mg, or 20mg. The recommended starting dose is normally 10mg, although some people are prescribed higher or lower doses than this if their doctor deems it to be more suitable.
Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.
Cialis 2.5mg tablets
This lowest strength dose of Cialis is taken as a daily tablet. If you experience side effects from taking the 5mg dose, you will be reviewed and prescribed this lower strength form of the medicine as it means that 5mg was too powerful for you.
Cialis 5mg tablets
If you are using the daily dose variant of Cialis, you will generally be prescribed the 5mg strength tablet by your doctor. The two daily doses work in the same way; the only difference is the strength of the medicine.
Cialis 10mg tablets
This is not the daily dose. It should not be taken more than once a day, and is not recommended for continuous daily administration. It is intended to be taken prior to anticipated sexual activity.
Cialis 20mg tablets
20mg is the strongest dose of Cialis. It will be prescribed by your doctor if lower doses have not proved effective. It is not intended or recommended for continuous daily use, and should only be taken once in a day. Its effects can last up to 36 hours.
How to take Cialis
Take Cialis at least half an hour before you have sex.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, do not crush or chew it.
You can take Cialis with or without food.
It is important to remember that you will need to be sexually stimulated in order for Cialis to work properly. For this reason, you and your partner should still engage in foreplay to arouse you, as you would normally do, once the medication has been taken.
Read the patient information leaflet for a full list of instructions. Ask your doctor if you are unsure of anything.
