What are Bendroflumethiazide tablets?
Bendroflumethiazide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as thiazide diuretics, more commonly referred to as 'water pills'. They are called water pills because they make you urinate more often.
Diuretics are medicines that promote and increase the excretion of urine.
You must have a prescription to buy Bendroflumethiazide.
What is Bendroflumethiazide used to treat?
Bendroflumethiazide is commonly used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
High blood pressure is caused by a wide range of issues, including a family history of high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, age, lack of exercise and high levels of salt in your diet.
Certain health problems are also linked to it, including kidney disease and diabetes.
Why is Bendroflumethiazide prescribed to treat high blood pressure?
Clinical trials have shown that Bendroflumethiazide is a well-tolerated medicine that is effective at lowering blood pressure. If medicine is well-tolerated, it means you are unlikely to experience any serious side effects when taking it.
How does Bendroflumethiazide treat high blood pressure?
Thiazide Diuretics like Bendroflumethiazide tend to work directly on the kidneys and causes them to pass out more fluid. Thiazide Diuretics inhibit sodium absorption and as a result, increases fluid loss in the urine, a process called diuresis.
Taking water tablets like Bendroflumethiazide make you need to urinate more often, which helps to get rid of excess fluid in your body. This also means that you will have less fluid in your blood vessels and body tissues, which helps to lower your blood pressure.
Thiazide Diuretics also have a dilating (widening) effect on the blood vessels which allows blood to flow through the circulatory system using less force from the heart.
How long do Bendroflumethiazide tablets take to work?
Bendroflumethiazide usually takes around 2 hours to start working. However, it may take between 3-6 hours before fluid is excreted from your body.
Bendroflumethiazide can take 3-4 days to effectively lower your blood pressure. A single dose of Bendroflumethiazide will last for around 12 to 24 hours, which is why you should consistently take your tablets at a similar time every day.
Can you buy Bendroflumethiazide over the counter?
No, this is a prescription-only medicine (POM), so you cannot purchase it over the counter.
